Savvy Shopper - Be Fashionable and Frugal

Buying things is easy. You pay for them, and they are yours. You get to take them home. But smart shopping is more complex.

Smart shopping involves making wise choices that suit your needs and your budget. The smart shopper who wants to build a fashionable wardrobe knows that they have to take some time to make wise purchases. The smart shopper will stick to items they know they need, even if they aren't the most exciting, and avoiding impulse buys.

If you would like to be a savvy and fashionable shopper, here are some tips.

Stick to your budget: It doesn't sound groundbreaking to suggest a budget, but it is one of the best ways to stay on track with fashion. If you have a budget, and force yourself to stick to it, you will not make wild purchases of items you don't need and won't wear. You'll stay with items that suit your figure, your life, and your other clothing.

Make out a list of things you need before you go to the store. Know how much you can spend, and stay within this amount. If credit cards make it too easy for you to overspend, leave them at home and make your purchases with cash.

Choose clothes that can be worn in different ways: The longer you can wear an item, the better value you get for your purchase price. Skirts and tops that can be worn in warmer weather, but layered and worn in colder weather as well, are a good wardrobe investment. Basic tees and plain trousers are staples you should have on hand. They can be mixed and layered, if you keep them simple. Add punch and personality via accessories instead.

Buy clothing for the long haul: Only purchase items that you will be comfortable wearing for more than one season. This year's super-trendy item may be all the rage now, but may make you feel ridiculous next year. In contrast, more classic clothing will look polished and appropriate for several years or longer.

Don't be embarrassed when you are wearing your older clothing. Take pride in the fact that you made wise choices and your older clothing still looks current, suits your needs, and is in good condition.
