Stud sets are similar to cufflinks only it replaces the button holes that go down at the front of the shirt. There are specific garments that are both designed for cufflinks and stud sets. You would typically notice this because where you would expect a button, there is typically a hole in it where the cufflinks or stud sets are going to be placed. Your cufflinks should also match the event that you are attending. For instance, if you are going to a wedding or a corporate meeting, you are expected to wear formal cufflinks. On the other hand, if you are going on a football game or a racing game, then you can opt for more casual cufflinks. You have to remember that your cufflinks should match the other pieces of wardrobe that you wear like your necktie and shoes.
