Black & Blum was created slightly over a decade ago in 1998 by two good friends, Dan Black and Martin Blum. Dan Black is British born and educated. He grew up discussing products and design due to his family's manufacturing background. He graduated with honors from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, with a Degree in Design for Industry. His ingenuity in design became more evident during his experience working at IDEO in London. Later while at Frog Design in California and under the direction of Julian Brown from the Studio Brown bath collection, Black successfully completed many projects along with his great friend and fellow designer Martin Blum.

Martin Blum is Swiss born and has an Industrial Design Degree, also from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle. Martin's designs are an interpretation of his childhood in Switzerland combined with the passion and admiration he feels toward anything that is British. Blum, along with Black, established Black & Blum in 1998 with the intention of providing design consultation to other design companies. A short time later, they discovered that their calling was to design modern and unique looking accessories using steel as their main material.
